Pompeii: The Day the Mountain Woke

The story in brief

A green mountain nobody calls a volcano, an earthquake nobody connects to it, and one afternoon a cloud shaped like a pine tree. An admiral sails toward it to save a friend. His seventeen-year-old nephew walks his mother through a darkness like the end of the world, and his letters still teach the science of eruptions.
